Climate change advisory

The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, an advisory group created by the Canadian government has come forward with the best ways to stave off the harmful fallouts of Global warming and protect the Canadian economy.

The group comprising professionals from various fields including the academia, business and environmental experts called on Ottawa to build a price for emissions into the Canadian economy through instruments like a "Carbon tax" and a "cap-and-trade" system. The latter will allow companies with lower carbon emissions to sell their "unused quotas" to other companies with higher carbon emissions. Analysts claims that the carbon tax would promote the use of carbon-free fuels and increase efficiency in the use of fossil fuels. Others interject that it would also create not needed revenue for the government.

The Canadian government had previously proposed a 20% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and a further 60-70% cut by 2050. The government should be listening and paying attention to polls across Canada which suggest that the issue of a Global climate change is on top of Canadians priority issues. The government cannot irresponsibly and blindly align with interests that are thought to be anti-Kyoto and should as a matter of urgency get back to putting together a realistic Climate policy that Canadians can support. The time has indeed come.
