INTERDEPENDENCE, I have spent a lot of time pondering over this one word lately. It packs a lot of punch. I first read about this word, its meaning and applications in one John Maxwell's Leadership books. It was an eye-opener.
Interdependence means different things to different people. While some have decided to live and conduct themselves with this attitude, others have equated it with simply being dependent and not having a mind of your own.
Interdependence is much more, it is the language of nature. It is at the core of our very essence and at the foundation of our existence. It is what should defines us; our capability's and our shortcomings, our beliefs and doubts. In simpler terms it means 'You need me just as I need you', No one can thrive outside of others.
Interdependence is how our body and systems function. Although our lungs, brain and heart work specifically they are always in sync. In the animal kingdom, the relationship between the predator and the prey is a good example. Without one the other is extinct. Interdependence is how the world has always lived and functioned. It is a habit we all were born with, but have failed to nurture.
We live in a world of Independents and Dependents, when we really should be more Interdependent. We seek to reach the apex of our careers and achievements on our own, so we can utter "Self-made". We have come to celebrate people who make such claims as genius'. Really? The truth is there is no self-made anything, not on God's earth.
The circumstances of oppression, colonialism and unfairness reared our Independent spirits. We longed to be the Masters of our own fates; take charge of our lives and do only what we please. Imagine the promise,if we decided to 'co-operate' rather than be 'separate' on issues that confront us. It is free energy.
It is not just sufficient to aspire to control your own destiny. Our sacred responsibility is to do the 'right' thing to the best of our abilities. It is no wonder folks (I am) are fed up with just talk. We all need to rise above narrow interests, especially ideologies that don't feed or care for no one.
So lets bunch and work together. Everyone should pitch in. If we all stay in our little corners, nothing will get done and our problems will just simply stack up. Be open-minded. This is the Interdependent spirit. Like John Maxwell wrote "Interdependence has a higher value than Independence" so lets spend it.
Free Advice:If you are broke, do yourself a favor and be realistic. Stop living above your means.
